Apparently news writers aren't writing in a style i'd like to see.

"One of the night's biggest surprise came when the absent David Tao beat favourites Eason Chan of Hong Kong and Singapore's JJ Lam to bag best male Mandarin singer."

What do you mean one of the night's biggest surprise?
And by the way, even if it were a surprise,
It should be in plural form.
And whats with "Lam"?
Seriously. Can we all just agree on one surname?
